Chicago, Tokyo eliminated in bid for 2016 Olympics

Despite an inspiring pitch from President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, Chicago was amongst the first cities eliminated in the bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games.

Chicago was eliminated in the first round of voting despite being favored to be one of the two finalists in the bid for the Games.

In the second round Tokyo was eliminated leaving Rio de Janeiro and Madrid as the final candidates.

Chicago had seemed to pick up momentum in the last few days, with many International Olympic Committee members seemingly charmed by Mrs. Obama. But when IOC president Jacques Rogge announced the results of the first vote, Chicago's name was announced.
