The Tennessee Titans must switch quarterbacks from Kerry Collins to Vince Young

When the Tennessee Titans were 0-3 to start the season, everyone asked that head coach Jeff Fisher should make the switch from veteran quarterback Kerry Collins to the franchise player Vince Young, his back up.

It was not a strange request, because Fisher had done it before in 2006 when the Titans had started the season 0-3 then too, as he went from Collins to Young. The problem then was it was orders from above as owner Bud Adams wanted the then rookie Young leading the franchise and had logical reasons for his requests.

Now with the team heading down the path of a potential winless season like the Detroit Lions, will the coach make the switch or not?

Heading into last Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots, Fisher has reiterated that he will stick with Collins. Why? There has to be a logical and acceptable reason for going with Collins over Young.

Now Fisher has to go with Young, there is no excuse anymore; he has run out of reasons to go with Collins over Young.

When Tennessee started the season 0-3 and everyone asked if he would make the change, Fisher dumped the blame for the team’s poor performance at the door steps of someone else other than his quarterback. In order to support his position and continue to have Collins as his quarterback over Young, he dumped the problem in the laps of his defense and special teams.

So why not start a Young, who when he was installed as the starter in 2006 led the team to a 8-8 finish though the team did start that year 0-5 as well too. Young finished that season as the 2006 NFL Rookie of the Year.

He led the Titans to key wins over the New York Giants and the Indianapolis Colts, both teams led by Manning brothers Peyton and Eli.

As the No.3 overall draft pick in the 2006 NFL draft, Young came into the league with serious potential, it seems like coach Fisher did not draft Young, because if he believes in the player then Young would be a starter.

It’s understandable that Young was benched last year after a woeful performance; quarterbacks have them, it’s called a bad day at the office and with Collins leading the team to the post season last year, it was tough to make a case for Young in 2008.

But this is 2009 and Collins is 0-6 so far. The excuses can only go so far after a while especially with the win column still empty five weeks into the season.

This is not the first time a coach has made a quarterback change. The Cleveland Browns already went back to Derek Anderson because head coach Eric Mangini was not impressed with Brady Quinn’s performance.

Current Miami Dolphins vice president Bills Parcells has made quarterback changes in the past.

While Parcells was in charge of the Dallas Cowboys, he made the switch from Drew Bledsoe to an unknown backup in Tony Romo. By October 23, 2006, Parcells had replaced Bledsoe for the Cowboys start of their second half against the New York Giants. After that game, Romo was named starter for the Cowboys heading into their game against the Carolina Panthers.

This is not breaking new frontiers or setting new standards, it is part of the business. No matter how coach Fisher attempts to explain the rationale behind his loyalty to Collins, it will never make sense in a league where you are judged by your wins and not losses.

If Fisher benched Young after one bad start last season, after Young had started 15 games the previous year in 2007, what barometer is he using for Collins compared to Young?

During the off season, Young expressed his frustration that he was not starting and like any young athlete, he asked that he should be traded on a radio station. That might have angered Fisher, but the coach had a ready-made excuse heading into the first game of this season; Collins led Tennessee to the post season last year.

Compared to his counterpart with the Oakland Raiders, Young truly needs to start. During the offseason, the Raiders signed Jeff Garcia a veteran who had played on San Francisco, led the Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the post season. Everyone initially though he was brought in just in case franchise quarterback JaMarcus Russell failed to meet expectations.

Well, the Raiders cut Garcia and are currently going to stick with Russell. Maybe Fisher currently at 0-5 needs to take a page from the Raiders book this one time.

If the Raiders can stick with their franchise quarterback and believe he can lead their team, why does Fisher doubt the prowess of Young, a player who led his college Texas Longhorns to the BCS Championship game against another undefeated them the USC Trojans.

Young was a terrific and exciting player coming out of college and Fisher who has seen a lot of great talent come through the Titans should be able to see that.

Fisher has been the head coach for Tennessee since 1995. He has seen them all come and go, from the late quarterback Steve McNair, running back Eddie George and defensive end Jevon Kearse who left for the Eagles and is now back. It seems Young is not the only player Fisher has a problem with.

Apparently kearse not added to the lineup for the Titans 31-9 loss to the Colts two weeks ago. Now you would be shocked to find out that a stalwart player of Kearse’s ability was a scratch from the game.

Given that Fisher’s excuse initially was that Collins was not to blame, you would expect a player of Kearse’s abilities to be in every game. And as things continue to head down south, when will Fisher make the change that is necessary on offense, not on defense, and install Vince Young as the Titans starting quarterback?

During their game against the Patriots, everyone could see that most players on the Titans roster were giving up, not playing hard and not giving their all. If Fisher is delusional and says that no one is, then he might be replaced.

Titans running back LenDale White mentioned on the Sporting News Radio’s The Monty Show, that Young is prepared to return to action and lead the Titans. Obviously with White saying this, he is not the only player who feels that way.

“Vince just has to be patient, things happen, you know?” White said. “You've just got to be ready, when that times comes and they throw an opportunity your way you've gotta be ready to jump into the driver's seat and take that wheel and bring home the race and I think Vince is ready for that.”

Though White was cautious not to throw Collins under the bus, but he needs to take a stand that everyone on that team might have already taken, which is Young is their quarterback and should be given full support by the head coach.
