Raiders coach Tom Cable should be disciplined for violating personal conduct policy

For the Oakland Raiders the troubles on the field and off the field continue to get worse. On top of suffering another embarrassing loss to the New York Jets on Sunday, head coach Tom Cable still is not out of the woods concerning the alleged incident with former assistant Randy Hanson.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said on Sunday that the league will still investigate the incident to see if Cable did in fact violate the NFL’s personal-conduct policy.

"We will look into that decision," Goodell said. "We will follow up on it. And, if any action is necessary, we will take that."

Since the Napa, Calif., DA said Thursday he won't charge Cable in an assault alleged by Hanson, it clears him from facing any criminal charges, but that doesn’t mean that he will be able to escape the same policies heavily enforced by Goodell that many NFL players have fallen victim to.

If Goodell wants to stay consistent and fair with the way he has handled player incidents in the past, Cable should be disciplined in some way for whatever took place during the incident. Many players have been held accountable for their actions, regardless of whether or not they were found criminally guilty of anything.

The fact that Cable acted in such a way to even have the allegations of assault arise speaks to a violation of the personal-conduct policy. It is obvious that Cable did do something that probably shouldn’t have been done and once Goodell finishes gathering the information, he needs to discipline Cable appropriately.

Along with the discipline that Cable should face from the league, he also will still almost definitely face a lawsuit from Hanson. Hanson‘s attorney, John McGuinn, told FanHouse that the district attorney's decision not to file charges won't have any impact on Hanson's plan to file a lawsuit.

"As we have said all along, whether [the D.A.] files or not, it makes no difference to us," McGuinn said. "We have our civil case and we will proceed accordingly."

At the end of all of this, despite not facing criminal charges, Cable should definitely face punishment from the league. The coaches should be held accountable just as much as the players, and if this incident had involved players, there would probably be less of a discussion of whether or not to discipline them.
