The Indianapolis Colts are off to a 5-0 start, they have won 14 straight regular-season games and yet no one is really talking about Peyton Manning’s team as much as the media is continues to sign praises and raise the roof on the Minnesota Vikings, the Denver Broncos and the New York Giants.
On Sunday, Manning threw for 309 passing yards along with three touchdowns as the Colts dominated the Tennessee Titans 31-9 on their home turf at LP Field.
At a point during the game, Manning threw 16 straight completed passes as he led Indianapolis to a win over the team they lost to in Week 8 of last season; that was the last game the Colts lost in the regular season also.
With his 309 passing yards, Manning also joins former quarterback Steve Young and current Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner as one of the quarterbacks to begin a season by passing for 300 yards in five straight games.
With a slight injury knock to his left knee, Manning, luckily has a bye week which should allow him some rest and he can look towards passing for 300 yards again when he leads the Colts to St. Louis to face the Rams.
The Rams are 0-5 with radio commentator Rush Limbaugh looking to purchase the team so this should not be a problem. Since they are yet to win a regular season game this season, should we expect Manning to match Young and Warner with a sixth 300 yard passing game? Fans should not doubt that thought becoming reality.
That would not be the only accomplishment for Manning so far. When he threw his first touchdown in the first quarter, he not only had his 343rd touchdown pass of his career, he also went ahead of Fran Tarkenton, moving him into third place behind Vikings current quarterback Brett Favre and Dan Marino.
With all these accolades, moves up the ladder of legendary status, Manning should be the focus of the NFL at the moment, but no!
The attention is on the teams no one expected to be where they are at the moment especially the undefeated Broncos and the Vikings led by the veteran Favre. But did anyone anticipate the Colts especially with their defense would be undefeated?
So far this season, the Colts have won in convincing fashion against the Seattle Seahawks when Manning, at home, dismantled their visitors, without their star quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, 34-17.
To some Manning was not convincing in their season home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but with the help of the Colts defense, the older Manning still threw 301 yards in a 14-12 win. That victory showed more character about the defense many thought had holes heading into the season and they played tough holding the Jaguars.
With back-to-back road victories on national television against the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night on ESPN and another win six days later on NBC’s Sunday Night game against the Cardinals, Manning demonstrated that big lights mean nothing to him. He is all about winning football games.
Looking at the Colts upcoming schedule, after going on the road to St. Louis, their next three games are at home, with two of them against the San Francisco 49ers and the Houston Texans setting Indianapolis up for a potential 8-0 record at the end of Week 9, with Manning quietly setting more records; he also became the third quarterback in NFL history to have 70 games with a passer rating of 100 or better.
With the New England Patriots visiting Indianapolis in Week 10, Manning would certainly still have an undefeated season and would need all the help from a team missing two key leaders head coach Tony Dungy and Manning’s favorite wide receiver Marvin Harrison.
Without those two important figures, many anticipated the Colts would come out flat this regular season and expectations were not as high.
Talk about making what you have work and his current team deserves credit and Manning as always has turned the light on them instead.
“You try to do what you have to do to win. I’ve never been about that or try to do that in the middle of the season. At the end of the season, I’ll admit that. I’ll do that for other people. Like if Reggie Wayne needs five catches, I’ll do that,” he said.
