NFL says crucial hit on Brett Favre in NFC Championship game should have been flaggedSubmitted by admin on January 29, 2010 - 1:08pm |
NFL vice president of officiating Mike Pereira is speaking out against a hit that came in the third-quarter of the NFC Championship game against Brett Favre that should have been called a penalty and reversed a costly interception.
"It's the type of hit that we don't want," NFL vice president of officiating Mike Pereira said, "... because clearly we're trying to protect the knees and we need to focus on this to make sure we don't miss [them]."
Pereira appeared on NFL.com and NFL Network this week and stated that the correct call had not been made in the championship game that featured the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings. The Saints roughed up Favre the entire game despite not sacking him one time in the contest.
With the score tied 21-21, Favre took a hit from Saints defensive end Bobby McCray. The quarterback's left ankle was injured during the play, and he got it treated on the sideline and remained in the game. The Saints went on to with the game 31-28 and will now face the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl.
"Pretty much a direct shot into the back of [Favre's] legs," Pereira said of the hit.
