Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel signs six-year, $63 million deal

Matt Cassel’s breakout year has finally paid off. The Kansas City Chiefs signed the former backup to a six-year, $63 million deal, with $28 million guaranteed.

After a huge year that saw Cassel throwing 3,693 yards and 21 touchdowns after Tom Brady injured his leg, Cassel was traded to the Chiefs with Mike Vrabel for a second round pick.

Cassel was franchised by the New England Patriots after his outstanding performance replacing Brady and signed a one-year deal for $14.561 million.

The contract extension gives the Chiefs some long-term stability at quarterback. Cassel will have a big target to throw to with Dwayne Bowe at wide receiver and he has a Pro Bowl running back with Larry Johnson. Unfortunately, Cassel was the most sacked quarterback last year behind a decent New England offensive line. He’ll need to avoid the pass rush and deliver the pass earlier if he wants to step up his game.

After a 2-14 season, the Chiefs will do anything they can to improve their play. The new contract is definitely an incentive for Cassel to repeat his performance and if he adjusts to the new system, the Chiefs will be glad they made the investment.
