Kansas City Chiefs cut Amani Toomer among others

In a somewhat surprising move, the Kansas City Chiefs have cut veteran wide receiver Amani Toomer.

Toomer was brought in to supposedly solidify a receiving core in Kansas City and appeared to be a solid pickup by Todd Haley and Scott Pioli in the offseason.

The former New York Giant was picked up and signed to a one year contract. Toomer only recorded two receptions this preseason for a 14.5 yard average.

For his career, Toomer has 668 receptions for 9,497 yards and 54 touchdowns. Last season he hauled in 48 passes for 580 yards and four touchdowns. Toomer appeared in every regular season game and started 12 in 2008.

It will be unlikely for Toomer to surpass the 10,000 yard career mark after the Chiefs announcement today. The former Michigan Wolverine is still a big-frame at 6’3” and might garner some looks from some teams looking for some size at the wide receiver position with Philadelphia coming to mind.

Perhaps Toomer had become expendable in the eyes of the Chiefs staff due to the late signing and great play in the preseason by wide receiver Ashley Lelie. The former first-round pick by the Denver Broncos has given the Chiefs a deep threat to compliment Dwayne Bowe. Mark Bradley, Terrance Copper and Bobby Engram are other veteran receivers currently on the Kansas City roster.

Toomer was released as an initial wave of cuts by the Chiefs to slim their roster from 80 to 75 players. He will join other big name veteran, free-agent receivers currently on the market in Marvin Harrison, Matt Jones and Jerry Porter among others. The Chiefs brought Toomer in for a workout along with receivers D.J. Hackett and David Terrell over the summer.

Other players released today were veteran defensive tackle Alphonso Boone and rookie tackle Cameron Goldberg.

Running back Kolby Smith remained on the Physically Unable to Perform list which will hold him out of action at least until Week 7. Receiver Davard Darling reportedly has a torn ACL and was placed on injured reserve.
