Cleveland Browns switch quarterback as Brady Quinn returns as starter

The Cleveland Browns, especially head coach Eric Mangini, has been contemplating his starter since training camp. First he went with Brady Quinn to start the season, then went to his backup Derek Anderson and now Mangini has made the change back to Quinn ahead of the Browns Monday Night Football game against the Baltimore Ravens.

A huge divisional game for the Browns as Quinn gets a second opportunity to prove to the team that he is the better option for Cleveland at the quarterback position.

Cleveland lost their first four games, but won once against the Buffalo Bills in a low scoring game 6-3. Since then, Cleveland’s offense has scored 23 points in their last three losses to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears.

Though the Browns are coming off a bye week, Mangini had to make a change after watching the team lose 30-6 to the Bears.

Though Quinn lost his job in Week 3, at halftime, against the same upcoming Ravens, what’s different this time is the Browns have looked worse than before and Mangini knows there is no excuse since there is no GM to take the fall now. Also in the Browns only win against Buffalo, Andersen completed two passes; yes you heard that correctly only two passes and the team’s six points were scored from field goals.

Unfortunately for Andersen, when he replaced Quinn, he went 1-4 in five starts. Not really convincing since the team went to the backup because Quinn as a starter was not producing.

With Quinn, who started 0-3 to begin the season, his coach thinks he has shown enough in practice to deserve another chance and also makes Mangini’s decision much easier.

“He’s had good weeks of practice,” Mangini said of Quinn. “He’s worked hard since the first transition was made. I look forward to him taking advantage of this opportunity and helping us improve.”

For Quinn he has to take advantage of this second chance, but unfortunately for him, it is against a 4-4 Ravens team that prides itself on their defensive abilities and getting to the quarterback along with interceptions is something they do often.

It’s an all important Monday Night game where the bright lights shine, and judging by Quinn’s opportunities in the past, even in college, he never played great when the opposition was big. Will this be any different especially against a hungry Baltimore team and one of the NFL’s hard-hitting defenses?

“I’m excited to play,” Quinn said. “I’m excited to be a part of Monday night. Every team in the NFL is tough, them especially. We’ve got our hands full right now.”

Now there is also the rumor still circulating Cleveland that the Browns might want to trade Quinn during the offseason; a quarterback sitting on the bench does not hold serious trade value compared to him playing. The reason is because Mangini has mentioned he would like to start Quinn for the rest of the season. It seems like Mangini is wearing both the coach and GM cap these days, the coach also does not want to carry the contract load of a $10 million backup if Quinn sat on the bench. Having Quinn play now can provide the Browns the opportunity to then trade him at season end; the catch is if Quinn plays well.
