New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards will start Monday Night Football game

Even with the news of an impending investigation - and his former quarterback Derek Anderson allegedly happy that he is gone, - the New York Jets not only traded for wide receiver Braylon Edwards, the team has mentioned he will start their Monday Night Football game against the Miami Dolphins.

Though Edwards did not practice with the Jets on Wednesday - he had yet to arrive when practice started - Jets general Manager Mike Tannenbaum mentioned that the five-year receiver is expected to start against the Dolphins “if everything goes as expected.”

“If everything goes as expected with physicals and paperwork and all that, how much he plays will be up to [offensive coordinator Brian] Schottenheimer and [head coach Rex] Ryan,” Tannenbaum said. “Our expectations are that he is going to come in and start. It’s a little bit like Ty Law last year, who came in late and played against the Patriots on Thursday night.”

Though the Jets need a deep threat, will Edwards’ arrival in New York provide rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez that extra help he needs, though Edwards is prone to dropping balls?

Apart from the drops, Edwards is a legitimate threat when it comes to going deep. His former quarterback Anderson liked going deep to him, but hopefully his drops does not cost him and the Jets yards when it matters.

Also he faces a police and an NFL investigation for an off-the-field altercation as he is alleged to have assaulted a friend of NBA player LeBron James outside of a Cleveland nightclub on Monday.

Although he has not been charged with a crime yet, the NFL has a strict conduct policy which may include some fines and discipline from Commissioner Roger Goodell due to the “use or threat of violence” as alleged by the promoter who was assaulted by Edwards.

He has been involved in other off-the field incidents and though the Jets knew about the current issue, New York still went ahead and traded for Edwards.

“We went through thorough research,” Tannenbaum said. “We're comfortable with adding Braylon. We'll cooperate with all the authorities, and we're glad he's here. We did our due diligence.”

The 3-1 Jets have been searching for a replacement for receiver Laveranues Coles since the offseason and Edwards, in their opinion, fills that spot.

“It's just another piece that we wanted to add,” Tannenbaum said. “We're excited to get Braylon. We think he's going to help us. It was a position that we liked, but it was also a position we felt that if there was an opportunity to improve, we were going to go ahead and try to do that.”

With a fresh start in New York, where the lights shine brighter on you than anywhere else, Edwards should have an opportunity to regain his confidence. Against a 1-3 Dolphins currently struggling and without quarterback Chad Pennington should be a good place to start.

So far this season, Edwards has 10 receptions, 139 yards but no touchdowns in the four games he started with Cleveland before he was traded to New York.

The last game against the Bengals, he did not have a single catch. So far for his career, Edwards has 238 receptions, 3,697 yards and 28 touchdowns to go along with three fumbles - two of which he lost.

In less than eight months, the Browns have shipped Edwards and tight end Kellen Winslow out of Cleveland. Both players were their two top 10 draft picks in the 2004 and 2005 NFL drafts.

Many thought both Edwards and Winslow would form a duo for Cleveland’s offense that would play themselves into the Browns’ history books. That’s won’t happen now as both superstars have been traded in an obvious tactics to rebuild.
