He is known to never hold back and is one person who always will give his opinion on his sport, either when he played in the NBA or currently retired and holds an analyst position. Now the former NBA great Charles Barkley says he thinks he can do a better job than some general managers in the NBA today.
Barkley, currently working for TNT as an analyst on their NBA broadcast says he would like the opportunity to run an NBA team. Though Barkley is in no rush because he would prefer to have the appropriate job, you cannot but ask the question why not?
Can the former Philadelphia, Phoenix and Houston player run an NBA team? He probably can. Barkley is from the old school; the guys who played the game by wearing their heart on their sleeves. He played his heart out every time he took the court; something you cannot say about a lot of players who were privileged to play in one of the most popular sports in the world.
The fact that Barkley mentioned at a luncheon that some GM’s have done a “bad Job, plain and simple,” is accurate. The NBA has had some men in position with bad choices in draft picks, trades and signing players as well; not all of them but some. As a fan of the sport you have to question the decision making of some general managers who have led franchises down the drain instead of reviving them.
Barkley is one person a lot of current players will like to play for. He played the game; he embodies what it means to have been one of the touch athletes to play his position. He was an undersized power forward when he went up against some big name players when he played in the Eastern Conference with the Philadelphia 76ers and even bigger players when he moved to the West and carried the Phoenix Suns to the NBA Finals before losing to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in 1993.
With General managers like Joe Dumars of the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics’ Danny Ainge leading the franchises to NBA titles, a former player like Barkley with his image, status and respect he gets from the media, players and fans, if allowed can be a great general manager in the NBA.
Sometimes the sport needs another outspoken personality like Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and maybe it’s about time Barkley gets an opportunity to show he can run with the big boys who make the major decisions in the NBA.
