The Philadelphia 76ers have met with their former superstar guard Allen Iverson to discuss the possibility of a return to the NBA for the 10-time All-Star who recently announced he was retiring from the NBA.
Apparently both parties met in Dallas for nearly two hours where the 76ers will face the Dallas Mavericks. Team president Ed Stefanski said in a statement released that no commitment has been made yet since both parties are still deciding on the best option.
Iverson along with his agent met with Stefanski, head coach Eddie Jordan and two other members of the franchise that he once played for until he was traded to the Denver Nuggets in 2006 regular season.
Iverson’s career highlights were with the 76ers, as he was an NBA MVP and an All-Star player when he played in Philadelphia. The reason Philadelphia is considering bringing Iverson back is because their point guard Lou Williams is out for at least eight weeks after his jaw surgery.
The possibility of Iverson returning to Philly would make this story end on a positive light. This is the team that drafted him, surrounded him with players that were more complimentary than star studded and also the same city and team he rewarded with scoring titles and a trip to the NBA Finals in 2000-01 season.
Iverson’s premature retirement was anticipated as such by most pundits. A player of his caliber, when traded by the Nuggets to the Detroit Pistons for Chauncey Billups, Iverson would not come off the bench and only during the offseason did he find a Memphis Grizzlies team to pick him up.
Even in Memphis, Iverson complained about coming off the bench and after both parties parted ways, he cleared waivers and did not attract any teams including the New York Knicks.
Though the 76ers are looking at other players to replace Williams, the organization said it “will continue to discuss internally whether or not to pursue this course.”
Though both the team and their former franchise player parted ways in bitter fashion, the 76ers have not won a playoff series since 2003 and Iverson was the one player who led them to their last finals appearance in 2001. If Iverson rejoins Philadelphia, it would be a great reunion for the team, the city and the player.
