San Francisco Giants and star pitcher Tim Lincecum have both agreed to a two-year, $23 million deal. The deal was reported to be struck after a salary arbitration hearing that was first delayed then canceled in Tampa. Lincecum is subject to a physical for the agreement to go ahead.
Apparently, Lincedum the 2008 and 2009 Cy Young winner had demanded a $13 million salary for the 2010 season. That amount if agreed would have been a record for a player entering his first year of arbitration.
This season, Lincecum will receive a $2 million signing bonus along with his $8 million salary and next season, his salary will increase to $13 million. Since Lincecum made his debut in Major League Baseball, he is 40-17 in wins with a 2.90 ERA.
The two-time reigning NL Cy Young winner, at 25, has led the National League in strikeouts twice, thrown at least 225 innings twice and led in complete games once. Nicknamed “Freak” and “Franchise” by teammates, Lincecum will earn $200,000 for pitching 225 innings, $500,000 for each Cy Young Award, $250,000 for second place, $100,000 for third, $75,000 for fourth and $50,000 for fifth place.
For each All-Star appearance, Lincecum will receive $100,000. He would also receive an additional $100,000 for an NL MVP, $75,000 for the World Series MVP and $50,000 for the league Championship Series MVP.
If his salary arbitration had gone ahead, Lincecum would have set a record beating out Ryan Howard’s $10 million from 2008.
Lincecum is not the only pitcher involved in off season deals. Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander signed a five-year, $80 million deal with Seattle Mariners’ Felix Hernandez receiving a five-year, $78 million deal.
