Report: Jim Thome and Minnesota Twins agree to one-year, $1.5 million deal

According to The Associated Press’ source, first baseman Jim Thome and Minnesota Twins of the American League Central have agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal. The contract also includes performance bonuses.

The AP’s source familiar with the negotiations between both parties asked for anonymity since the team has yet to make the announcement.

Thome was traded from the Chicago White Sox to the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 31, 2009. Though the slugger was interested in rejoining the White Sox, Chicago’s manager Ozzie Guillen told Thome that he would not get enough at-bats if he rejoined the team.

With the Twins, Thome will be expected to bat off the bench rather than his middle-of-the-lineup which he did for his illustrious 19-year Major League career which is still going on now that he is with Minnesota.

Thome started his career with the Cleveland Indians where he played from 1991 till 2002. After the 2002 season, Thome signed a six-year, $85 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. With the emergence of Ryan Howard, Thome was expendable and in 2005, Philadelphia traded him - with $22 million - to the White Sox for Aaron Rowand and minor leaguers Gio Gonzalez and Daniel Haigwood.
